Catrice Arts Collection Limited Edition Palette

A few days ago I received a parcel from home with all sorts of Christmas goodies, which also included this palette which my sister kindly got for me. She sent me a snapchat of this a while ago and the packaging looked so pretty I just HAD to have it! Thankfully my sister is a lovely person so she got it for me and I was very excited to finally get it. The packaging is cardboard with a magnetic closure but it seems really quite sturdy and obviously it looks beautiful. Inside you get six eyeshadows, a blush, a highlighter and a black eyeliner. You also get a brush/applicator thing but I never use those anyway so it's just a waste of space really. In the picture above I'm wearing the lighter purple shade all over my lid with a bit of the darker purple through the crease and the outer V. I'm also wearing the blush and the highlighter but I applied them very lightly for a natural flush so they don't really show up in the picture.

Here are some swatches for the eyeshadows, there's two matte shades and four shimmery ones. The two lightest shimmery shades don't show up in the swatches very well but would look lovely as a highlight or a simple wash of colour to highlight your eyes on a lazy day. My favourite shades are the purples and the last shade which is sort of a shimmery taupe. I think that together they would make a really lovely smokey eye! Now for the quality of the eyeshadows, I wasn't overly impressed with the pigmentation of most of them but for the price it's definitely fine. However I found them very hard to blend, even with the help of my trusty Mac 217.
The blush and the highlighter are quite subtle but pretty and very pink toned. There's quite a lot of shimmer running through the blush so I don't think you even need to use a highlighter with it but the highlighter shade on it's own is very pretty, pink toned and with a fine shimmer. Last but not least, the eyeliner is one of the things that stood out to me the most in this palette as it's really pigmented and has a great creamy but not too creamy consistency (am I making any sense here?). It has some shimmer particles in it but they're very subtle and you can't really see them when you wear it.

Overall I think this palette is great value for money and I absolutely love the colours and the packaging, I just wish they were a liiiittle creamier and easier to blend.

What's on my nails #3- The Poundland Bargain

Yesterday I spent my day shopping for Christmas presents and on my way home I walked past Poundland so I decided to see what they have on offer in the beauty department at the moment. Poundland have great brand offers sometimes, I've got a Sally Hansen and an OPI nail polish which I got for £1! So today I was really happy when I saw that they had loads of Revlon nail polishes in pretty glittery colours. I chose this purple shade which is so lovely and shimmery and perfect for the holiday season.

Bleach London Tangerine Dream Hair Colour

I've been thinking about dying my hair a crazy colour again for a while, especially now that it's quite light at the ends so when I saw these new fun hair colours from Bleach London I was sold!

Hit the pan #3

What is it with me and powders recently? I think I've mentioned that I don't like the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder before but I decided to put aside our differences and give it another chance- mainly because my Soap and Glory powder is currently living in my handbag since it's great for touch ups.

Sleek Pout Polish Review

I've been wanting to try the Sleek Pout Polishes for ages and when I was at Superdrug last week picking up two things for a Christmas present I just had to get one, as it was 3 for 2 on all cosmetics so I essentially got it for free.

Before the Performance- The Routine

Today I have a pole fitness Winter Showcase which I am dancing a solo in. I'm very very nervous and slightly shaking as I write this but I wanted to share with you what I do beauty wise before the performance.

Hey guys! Today is my first outfit post ever, I'm really sorry about the quality of the photos, until I've got my tripod this will have to be my set up :( It was really cold today and I wanted to wear something comfortable but still look nice so I went for shoes with a slight heel.

Three minutes, three products eye look

Sometimes you just don't have time for an elaborate eye look but you still want to do a little more than mascara- I've been wearing this look quite a lot because I like the wide eyed look it gives. I only use three products for this- an eyeliner (I use the Rimmel Scandaleyes in Bronze which is a lovely shimmery bronze colour), a white eyeliner and a mascara. All I do is line my upper and lower lash line with the eyeliner, use the white eyeliner in my waterline to really open up the eyes and then use lots and lots of mascara on the top and bottom lashes- it's really simple yet effective.

What do you think of this look?

What's on my nails #2

So for the past two weeks I've not been wearing nail polish in order to give my poor brittle nails a bit of a break and let them regain their strength...

What's on my face #2- Lorde inspired

This morning when I was preparing to get ready I went on spotify to put on some music. I've been slightly obsessed with Royals by Lorde recently so I thought I'd put on some music by her and when I saw the cover photo on spotify I immediately decided to recreate the look she was wearing. It's quite simple with a very straight winged out eyeliner and a bright purple lip. Probably more of an evening look for most people but I love wearing bold lips during the day too!

The Fancy Dress #1

If you read the post about my Halloween Costume you may know that I am absolutely obsessed with fancy dress. Here in the UK we love our fancy dress parties so I get the chance to dress up a lot, which has led to me owning quite an extensive fancy dress collection! I like to go all out for themed parties, you will never see me put on some cat ears and drawing on whiskers, I put some serious effort into my outfits. However I do try to keep it cheap since I can't splurge on new costumes all the time, so I thought I'd do a series on fancy dress and maybe inspire some of you!

Hit the pan #2

I've recently hit pan on the pink side of my Kick Ass Concealer by Soap and Glory, which has become my go to concealer! It seems quite expensive at £10 but you get a pinky coloured concealer for under eye circles, a yellow toned concealer for regular concealing AND a powder to set the concealer with!

What's on my face #1

Today is my first "What's on my face" post! I absolutely love reading these so I thought I'd start the series myself- so here's what I'm wearing today:

The Boots Points Haul

I did not break my spending ban! Two days ago I realized that I was running out of shampoo and conditioner and I panicked a little bit because I knew that if I go to Boots and spend money I will break my spending ban. But then I realized that I have tons of Boots points which I can use to buy some new shampoo and conditioner without actually spending any money... So here's what I got:

The Sunday Pamper/Organisation Day

Sundays are probably my favourite day of the week- I get to sleep in, have a lovely breakfast in bed while catching up on YouTube videos and then the rest of the day is dedicated to pampering myself and organising everything so I can have a good start to the week. So here's what I do:

No Make Up days and confidence

As much as I love makeup and enjoy putting it on, I've had quite a few no makeup days recently, for several reasons. I have been finding it really hard to get up in the morning because it's so cold so I often just don't have time to put on makeup but I've also just not felt the need on some days. I think it's important to have no makeup days every once in a while, not only to give your skin a break but also to realize that you don't need to wear makeup! I know quite a few people who simply won't leave the house without a full face of makeup on and when you are in that situation, putting on makeup can very easily become a chore, which it shouldn't be. I believe that to love makeup, you need to realize that you don't need it. I love wearing makeup, I love playing with different looks, but I don't NEED to wear it- I still feel completely comfortable without any makeup on and I feel like some people need to get to that stage. Makeup is a tool to enhance your natural beauty- not to make yourself like a different person.

How do you feel about not wearing makeup?

Quick Day to Night Make-Up Transformation

Sometimes you wear natural makeup during the day and then end up going out in the evening- most of the time when that happens to me I don't want to take off all the makeup I already have on, I just want to update it a little. So here's how I go from natural day makeup to an evening look:

A rant about The Body Shop marketing

Today I went to the Careers Fair put on by the University of Sussex and University of Brighton. It was a great day and I got to look at many great job opportunities (and got loads of free pens) and I got especially excited when I saw that The Body Shop has a stand because I think it's a great company! I'm very interested in marketing so they told me about all the internship opportunities they have and then much to my excitement handed me a goodie bag filled with samples!

Tips for staying warm while looking good

This post isn't really a part of sort your life out week, but I thought it would be appropriate to post it today since it's bonfire night! I'm going to Lewes Bonfire tonight which I am extremely excited about, but it's going to be really really cold! So here's some tips for staying warm without looking like the Michelin man:

Back to my skincare routine

As part of "Sort your life out week", I desperately need to get back on track with my skincare. I've been really slacking recently and unfortunately it's showing in my skin- so here's what I do on a daily basis (plus a few extras thrown in once or twice a week).

In the morning I just give my skin a quick cleanse with my La Roche Posay Effaclar cleanser and then apply the Effaclar Duo serum and my usual eye cream, the Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado. I like to keep it very simple in the morning because obviously I didn't wear makeup overnight (because that would be naughty!)

My evening skincare routine is a liiiiiittle bit more extensive... First I remove my makeup with the Mac Cleanse Off Oil which is great, although my Clinique mascara really is long lasting and it takes me quite a lot of work to take it off! I then properly cleanse either using my Clarisonic Mia with the Effaclar cleanser I use in the morning, or when I want to give my skin a break from exfoliation I use the Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm which I absolutely love. I also sometimes use this to get rid off the last little bits of eye makeup if I was wearing a strong eye that day.

I try to use the La Roche Posay Effaclar toner (yes, I do love that range) but it's one of those steps that I often skip because I'm lazy... naughty, I know. In the evening I use a lot more products so I normally start off with a pore refining serum, at the moment I'm using the Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Serum. Afterwards I use the Effaclar Duo or any other moisturiser I'm trying out at the time. I know that the Effaclar Duo is meant to be a serum but I have oily skin so it works fine as a moisturiser for me as well. For my eyes I again use the Kiehl's eye cream. I also use the NYX Grow Lash Serum which has really helped my eyelashes grow!

Some extra bits and bobs
Once a week I try to do a face mask, currently I'm using the No Clogs Allowed Mask by Soap and Glory which I'm really enjoying. I want to get a good clay mask for the oily parts of my face but I'm on a spending ban at the moment so I can't... If my skin is feeling dehydrated at all I like to use some coconut oil almost as an overnight mask- I really work it into the skin and let it sink in over night (I also use this in my hair- I go nuts over coconut oil). Twice a week, on Mondays and Sundays, I also treat my skin to the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate which leaves my skin feeling sooooo good! Unfortunately at £36 it's rather expensive so I don't use it every night, just as a Sunday treat and a mid-week pick me up.

What are your favourite skincare items?

Budgeting and my first ever spending ban

Budgeting- this word goes against everything I believe in. Okay, I'm being a bit overly dramatic here but I honestly hate hate hate budgeting. I just like buying pretty things and going out for coffee and sushi and trying out new makeup... Unfortunately I'm a student so I'm on quite a tight budget and I have been really really bad at sticking to it so today I decided to get my finances in order. I looked at how much money I have in my bank account- then cried a little bit- and then decided to make it work (in true Tim Gunn fashion).
So here's what I'm planning on doing along with a few tips that might help you.

The first thing I did was take the total amount of money and divide it by the number of weeks it has to last me. Didn't look too bad! I then realized that there's some stuff I have to pay for every month so I deducted that from the total and it was already looking a lot sadder. Turns out I can spend £40 a week... This is when I decided that a spending ban was in order!

Now if you've read my Beauty Blogger Tag then you know that I have never tried a spending ban so I'm not sure how this is going to go. But here's the things I'm not allowed to buy over the next month:

  • Make Up- no Allie you do not need that extra foundation, you have about a million already.
  • Hair care items (apart from shampoo and conditioner)- maybe this will actually lead to me using up some of the stuff accumulating in my beauty basket...
  • Starbucks- this is without a doubt going to be the hardest but it's definitely going to make an impact because I spend between £3-£7 every time I go to Starbucks- and I go A LOT.
  • Sushi and any meals out- Allie you have a perfectly fine kitchen, use it!
  • Chocolate- two birds with one stone, save money and maybe even get my abs to come out and say hello to the world again.
  • Clothes- I already have issues fitting all my clothes into my wardrobe, unless I sort through it Evelina Barry style, no new pieces shall enter my collection this month!
  • Candles- *sniff*.
  • Going to the pub- this one is going to be hard too but I'm sure my bank account and my body will both thank me for it.
Oh yes, it's going to be a hard month. But it's definitely going to be worth it when I don't go over budget this month and can spend more money on lovely Christmas presents!

I personally like weekly budgets because they're a lot easier to follow- of course there are always going to be weeks when you spend a little more but then just try to spend less the next week to even it out. Most of my money goes towards food because I try to eat healthy which is quite expensive. However what often happens is that I buy lots of good food and then not eat lots of it because fresh food goes off very quickly so I'm going to try to go food shopping more often for smaller shops and actually use everything up.

I hope you found this post useful in some way! Have you ever tried a spending ban?

My Halloween Costume

Firstly I'd like to apologise for the lack of posts in the last few days, I had a test and a coursework deadline this week and I don't work well under stress so it hasn't been great. However now I've handed in my work I'm back! Today I'm gonna share my Halloween costume from last night with you. Halloween is definitely one of my favourite "holidays" because I absolutely love dressing up! I planned this year's costume really far in advance and made my dress over the summer- yes, I made a wedding dress to then rip it up. It may seem like a lot of effort but it was definitely worth it! Unfortunately I didn't get as many pictures as I would have liked on the night but here are the ones I do have:
