A little haul

Remember that spending ban I had? Yeah me neither. The other day when I got my eyebrows done at Benefit (read about that here) I decided to go buy the Charles Worthington Texturising Spray because I'd seen people talking about it on twitter and needed something to perk up my currently rather sad looking hair. Unfortunately I didn't stop there and bought some other things too so today I wanted to share with you what I bought.

The Liebster Award

So this morning I woke up to a notification telling me that the amazing Olivia Mitchell had nominated me for a Liebster award! The idea behind this is to spread the word about some blogs you love that have under 200 followers. Once you've been nominated by someone (thank you Olivia!) you write 11 random facts about yourself and answer 11 questions the person who nominated you gave you and then nominate your own favourite blogs! So here it goes:

11 facts about me:

1. I'm actually from Frankfurt in Germany but I moved to England for boarding school when I was 15 and I stayed for uni.
2. I study Psychology but no I can't read your mind.
3. I have a slight obsession with Star Wars.
4. I have two tattoos.
5. I live with five Physics students (I'm Penny!).
6. I hate wearing pink- lipstick, nail polish, clothes, just no. It looks nice on other people but on me? Nope.
7. I collect leather jackets (I have seven... oops).
8. I have a motorbike and her name is Jamie.
9. I've been dancing since I was five and I've done pretty much every style there is.
10. My favourite city is New York.
11. I went travelling through Thailand and India by myself after I turned 18.

Olivia's Questions:

1. Who inspires you?
My biggest inspiration at the moment is probably Claire Marshall, I just love everything about her- her creativity, her style, the way she keeps her personal life separate from YouTube and just her general personality (or what I think her personality is from watching her videos anyway).

2. Summer or winter?
Summer all the way!

3. Would you rather be famous, or best friends with someone famous?
I'd rather be famous because being friends with someone famous it's easy to seem like you're using them (and famous people probably don't have much time for you).

4. What are your top 5 makeup essentials?
Concealer, eyebrow gel, mascara, powder and a bold lipstick.

5. How tall are you?
I'm 1.70 metres tall and I'm not sure how much that is in feet but at some point I just decided that I was 5'7 and I sort of stuck with that.

6. What's your favourite TV programme?
I watch so much TV it's really hard to say so I'm going to have to cheat and say two: White Collar (about an ex con who works as a consultant for the FBI) and Criminal Minds (a show about the Behavioural Analysis Unit of the FBI). Do you see a trend here?

7. Would your rather travel forward in time or back in time?
I'd rather travel back in time because I'm going forward anyway.

8. Chocolate or sweets?
In England: chocolate. In Germany: sweets (we have a much better Haribo selection).

9. Who's your favourite blog?
This is really hard! I follow 151 blogs on bloglovin' and I love every single one of them but currently my favourite is probably HelloOctober because she consistently posts great content and she's a fellow Brightonian!

10. Heels or flats?
The clue is in my blog name... I love my Docs and I wear them every day so flats all the way!

11. Who are your favourite YouTubers?
Again, so many! I obviously love Claire Marshall (heyclaire) but I also love essiebutton, beautycrush, Amelia Liana and all those people! My subscription list is endless.

My Questions:

1. Is there a certain makeup item that makes you feel instantly more confident?
2. What is your favourite book?
3. How many pairs of shoes do you have?
4. What fashion trend do you absolutely hate?
5. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
6. Tattoos or piercings?
7. What beauty item can you not live without?
8. Sushi- yay or nay?
9. What product or trend do you think is overhyped in the blogging world?
10. What inspired you to start your blog?
11. What is your favourite high end make up brand?

Blogs I love and hereby nominate:

My Benefit Brow Bar Experience

Before

After

Today I got my brows waxed for the first time. "19 years old, a beauty blogger and never waxed her eyebrows??", you might think- and rightly so. My lack of professional eyebrow shaping experience was due to the fear that something could go wrong, they could make my brows too thin or make them a shape I didn't like, etc. But when Emma got her brows done at the Benefit Brow Bar in Brighton and told me about her experience (which you can read about here) I decided to overcome my 'fears' and finally get my brows done.

My three favourite statement necklaces

I've never been one for big statement necklaces, I normally have one necklace that I wear every day but unfortunately I lost it at the beginning of summer so I've been in the market for a new necklace and I've picked quite a few pieces up along the way, including some big statement ones. I used to be completely unfazed by them but now that I own a few, I completely understand what the hype is about- they really do transform a simple outfit!

Empties #1

As you have probably guessed from the title, this is going to be my first empties post! In true beauty blogger fashion I have collected empty tubes and sachets in a bag under my dressing table for about two months and today I'm going to tell you what I thought of them!

TrèSemmé Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo, Translucent Formula, £5.25

I really liked this dry shampoo because it does a good job at making my hair look like I wash it wayyyy more than I actually do and it also gives it some texture. The main reason I got this was because of the translucent formula, because I absolutely hate that grey cast you can get from dry shampoos and it's really hard to get out of my dark hair. Like all dry shampoos it's obviously not completely translucent so if you don't shake it or you go a bit too crazy you will still end up with a bit of a white patch in your hair (careful if you're not using a mirror!) but as long as you're a bit careful, it's not a problem at all and this is a great product.

I would repurchase this but I'm currently using the Dove Dry Shampoo which is just as good but just gives that little bit more texture and since they're the same price point I think I will stick to the Dove.

Yankee Candle Sampler in True Rose, £1.80
I love this scent. I'm absolutely obsessed with roses, I love the way they look and the way they smell and this candle literally makes your room smell like it's filled with roses, like your life is a RomCom and a guy has secretly snuck into your apartment and filled it with tons and tons of roses. That's what this candle smells like. It's probably not for everyone but I can't get enough of it.

I'm not just repurchasing this, I'm getting the biggest size of this that I can find so my room can smell like roses at all times!

Concentrates and serums and those things are extremely difficult to review from a sample, since they're mainly aimed at long term benefits. I used this for about a week and it did make my skin feel lovely and soft in the morning but unless someone showers me in samples of this so I can try it out for a long period of time, I'm apprehensive to spend £49 on it...

Want it? Yes. Want to spend £49 on it? Not really... Maybe make a smaller size Kiehl's?

I got a seven day supply of samples for this when I ordered a Christmas present from Clarins so I could try it out for quite a long time (I made it stretch for two weeks) but again, it's a serum so it's hard to say how well it works. It's an anti aging serum so obviously it's hard for me to judge how well it's working since I'm 19 going on 20 and I don't exactly have many signs of aging yet *touch wood*. It's essentially an oil and has two sides that you mix together (a bit gimmicky if you ask me but maybe there's some fancy technology behind it?) and it applies really well to the skin and sinks in quickly. It did make my skin feel soft and hydrated but I can't judge the long term benefits from a sample.

I don't think I'm going to buy this since it's not aimed at my age group and for now I'm happy with my Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate.

Primark Home Candle in Sweet Berry and Patchouli, £2.50
I randomly smelled this when I was in Primark one day and loved the scent but I wasn't sure how well it would burn, since it's a Primark candle. My friend Emma actually works at Primark and she had one of these and said they actually burn very well so I went ahead and bought it and I was really pleasantly surprised! The scent reminds me a bit of my Yankee Candle in Black Cherry- it's quite fruity, which I love, and even though it's not as strong as the Yankee Candle it still manages to fill the room really well. The only thing I don't like it that it just burns a hole through the middle of the candle and you are left with lots of wasted wax on the sides, but for a £2.50 candle I don't mind that too much.

I really like this candle and I will definitely repurchase it. More scents please!

This moisturiser/serum/whatever it is has been getting quite a lot of attention in the blogging world recently! I first picked it up on a whim at City Pharma in Paris last May and I never looked back! It cleared up my skin so much and I have been using it ever since. I think I was overusing it for a while because it is meant to be a treatment product but now I just use it when my skin is being difficult and it really helps unclog my pores and just help with the general appearance of my skin and this was actually my second tube of it!

I already repurchased this about two months ago because I was scared I would run out!

I hope you liked this post and found it helpful! I already have quite a few products lined up again that I'm close to finishing so it won't be long until Empties #2!

What's on my nails #4

After over two weeks of nail rehab, I finally decided that it was time to wear nail polish again! I wanted to go for something bright and cheerful during this dark period in my life (exam time) so I went for Essie's Mesmerised. It's a beautiful royal blue which is super opaque, I actually only used one coat! As with all the Essie nail polishes the brush is perfect so it's really easy to apply this polish without getting it all over your cuticles, something which I'm definitely guilty of doing!
If you're wondering, the claw ring is from Claire's and the Buddha ring is from ebay. The watch is Michael Kors (my baby!).
Wearing gel polish has absolutely ruined my nails and I'm trying not to use it as much now even though I absolutely love the effect and the lasting power! Do you guys have any tips on how to make regular nail polish last longer? Like a specific base or top coat? Any tips would be much appreciated!

The Favourites- Alexander Wang Rocco Duffel Dupe

This is the first post in a new series called "The Favourites" that I want to start. You hear the word favourite quite a lot in the blogosphere and we always have all these products who are in our favourites posts at the end of the month and then sort of disappear from the radar again... 'The Favourites' is going to be strictly about things that I love so much that I've had them for months and months, used pretty much every day and probably even repurchased at some point. There won't be too many of these posts because true favourites don't come along that often but you'll know that when it says 'The Favourites' on it, it's a good one! So today I'm sharing with you my every day bag!
A handbag is such a great (and important) accessory for women and as much as men make fun of us for carrying huge bags around, I need all that space and they will happily use it too when they have something that doesn't fit into their ridiculously large pockets! Since I saw Claire Marshall's Alexander Wang Rocco Duffel I have been absolutely in love with it- I love most of the things Claire wears and the bag is just the perfect mix between being simple and practical whilst also being a fashion statement. Unfortunately at around £600 it's not quite within budget for me at the moment so I've had to compromise and get a similar one from ebay. No, this is not a fake bag- if it was fake it would say Alexander Wang on it which it does not. If you have an issue with this kind of thing watch Evelina's video on Fake vs Inspired Fashion. I would never wear a fake designer bag but I just can't afford to get a 'real' Rocco Duffel at this point (rant over).
Basically I got this bag around May last year, I think it cost around £17 and with shipping it came to £22 or something similar- all in all a great deal for a bag! It looks really good, the gold of the studs and the zipper wasn't that terrible cheap looking shiny gold that you often get with budget buys and all in all I was really happy with it! It's a great size as well, I can just about fit my laptop (it's a 13inch) in it so it's practical but not bulky at all. It did take a bit of wearing it in to get that really slouchy look because obviously it's not expensive leather but I don't mind that at all.
Now for the sad part- my bag broke around mid December. The strap ripped on one side and it was a very sad moment but I'm probably to blame for it since I put way too much stuff in there most of the time and the straps are no way meant to carry that much weight. But since I really love the bag and it has become a wardrobe staple for me (to the extent that one of my friends recognised me by my bag once when she was walking behind me) so I decided to repurchase it- now if that doesn't show that I love this bag then I don't know what does! Unfortunately it was sold out from the last seller I got it from so I had to get it from a different one. It worked out to be the same price because this one was more expensive but had free shipping and it was delivered really fast and is the exact same model as the other one- only difference is that unfortunately this one has very shiny gold details but I'm hoping that they will sort of fade to a nicer colour with continued use.
Well that was a rambly post wasn't it? I just wanted to share the love for this bag, it really is great and versatile! If you have the cash, by all means please buy the original and I will be jealous forever but if you don't, just type bottom studded bag into ebay and take your pick! Unfortunately the one I got is now sold out but there's tons of options there and they're all pretty much exactly the same.

Closet Confidential Tag

Not long ago I stumbled across the Closet Confidential Tag by Fleur de Force and I loved the idea of seeing what other people have in their wardrobes so I decided to do this tag myself!

1. What is the oldest item in your wardrobe/closet?

I don't have many really old items in my wardrobe because firstly, my body has changed quite significantly in the last few years and secondly my style has changed completely. In college I was very preppy and only wore skirts and dresses with heels- I even owned a cape! During my gap year I then started riding motorbikes and just generally changing a lot and that's how my new style evolved. However, before I even went to boarding school (so I must have been younger than 15) I was obsessed with Harley Davidsons and I got this Harley Davidson tshirt. I love how it actually looks very feminine but when you look closely you realise that it's a Harley tshirt- I still wear it on a regular basis.

2. What is the newest item?

The newest item in my closet is this dress from Primark that I got during the Christmas holidays. It was £7 down from £19 and I really like it because it's a thin denim material but has the leather detailing in the sleeves, which I think makes it quite unique. It's also really comfy and easy to wear so a great purchase!

3. What is the most expensive item?

This is a bit of a cheat because most of my investment pieces (boots and coats) are around the same price so it was hard to choose, but accessories count, right? I bought my Michael Kors watch with the money that I made from my first ever paid job (packing and stacking boxes in a warehouse- I live a glamorous life) and I haven't looked back. I hadn't worn a watch for years but it's so handy to have one! I chose a chunky one that looks a bit like a men's watch and is gold, silver and rose gold so it goes with any jewellery. It's definitely a great investment piece, I currently have no desire to buy another watch and I'm sure I will wear it for years.

4. What is the cheapest/most affordable item? (that you wear/use a lot!)

I wear a lot of cheap clothing but I'd say the cheapest item that I wear a lot was probably this grey jumper from New Yorker. I think it was around 10 Euros and I bought it on a whim and have been wearing it so much since (a little too much sometimes). It's oversized and I mostly wear it off the shoulder and I think it's really flattering actually. I wear this with jeans, over skirts or dresses, with leggings, with tracksuit bottoms, I wear this to sleep when it's cold! It's the perfect comfy jumper that still looks nice and can be dressed up easily. Definitely an amazing find!

5. What was the biggest bargain?

I'm pretty sure that this maroon leather jacket from Orsay is the biggest bargain I ever made. I spotted it on the sale rack a few years ago but it didn't have a price tag on it and when I got it scanned by a shop assistant it turned out that it was 10 Euros instead of 100! It's a size too big for me but that doesn't bother me too much and who can say no to a real leather jacket for 10 Euros?

6. What was the biggest waste of money?!

The biggest waste of money were definitely my Sam Edelman Lorissa shoes... I love them so much but they're half a size too small and I don't really have many occasions to wear them... I'm always scared the gems and spikes will fall off! They look great as decoration though.

BONUS QUESTION - Show us your three favourite items right now!

Faux fur snood

I got this from my friend Tom (yes, a guy picked this out- mind:blown) for Christmas because I was going skiing and I wore it every single day on the trip. Unfortunately it doesn't go with either of my coats but I think it looks awesome with my leather jacket and keeps me so warm. It just makes everything look a little more glamorous! Unless you decide to take a picture of it without makeup on. Don't do that. Eyebrows... *shiver*

Grey H&M T-Shirt

This is actually a really recent purchase as well, I saw it in H&M over the Christmas holidays when I was looking for something to wear on New Year's and I fell in love with it. It was only 10 Euros and it's such a nice material, it falls really nicely so even though it's baggy it doesn't make you look shapeless. I've been getting really into more baggy clothing and this is my favourite new baggy addition to my wardrobe- I love how it's so simple but it has the mesh inserts that make it look much more interesting. And yes I'm aware it has stains on it but I only noticed when I looked through the pictures...

Batman T-Shirt
I got this shirt from Primark in the summer and I absolutely love it, it's so comfortable but I think it looks really cool because let's face it, everyone loves Batman. It's really easy to wear, I like to just throw this on with some black jeans, boots and a leather jacket and I'm out the door- simples.

I hope you enjoyed this post and I tag all of you to do it too! Link your blogposts or YouTube videos in the comments below so I can have a sneaky look into your wardrobe...

Living Life in Docs goes social media!

Hey guys!

The Spending Ban- Take 2

After having a mini heart attack when checking my bank balance this morning, I decided that it's time for another spending ban! You can read about my last one here. The main reason I'm doing it this time is because there's a few things I need to save up for: my trip to London with Emma for her birthday, my water bill (dreading that one very much!) and the tattoo that I want to get for my 20th birthday- that's a lot of money I need to save and it won't happen at the rate I'm going at now!
So here are the things I will not be allowed to buy until my trip to London:
  • Clothes- my wardrobe is overflowing already
  • Make-Up- same story here, I'm an addict
  • Skincare and haircare- stocked up on everything, don't need that new facemask!
  • Meals out- *sniff*
  • Chocolate and ready meals- I'm trying to stop eating chocolate again and it's so much cheaper and healthier to cook from scratch than to buy something ready made
  • Drinks- now this one isn't as strict because I know that after exams are over I will want to go to the pub with friends and there's quite a few birthdays coming up but I'm giving myself a £10 budget for going to the pub/going out every week so I don't go crazy
So those are the things that I won't be spending money on for a while! It shouldn't be too hard because I really do have enough of all these things and it'll feel good to not have to worry about whether or not I'll have enough money left to eat by the end of the month... Although I think the ones that are going to be hard are not having meals out (including Starbucks...) and drinking because I do socialise a lot by going to the pub. However, not spending as much on these things will be good for my health too so it's two birds with one stone really!
I hope you enjoyed this post and it was somewhat helpful- are you planning a spending ban after the Christmas period?

What's on my bedside table

Since I've been spending the majority of my time in bed revising recently (my desk is not really useable so I do everything on my bed), I thought I'd share with you the things that are always within my reach on my bedside table!

Juice Cleanse Day 2 Update aka the Update of Failure

So... I failed. I know what you're thinking, I couldn't even make it through two days... pretty sad, right? But let me explain: I had no energy and was really moody and halfway through the day I decided that it just wasn't worth it. I have so much work to do with exams coming up and I just can't miss a day because I have no energy from doing a stupid juice cleanse. I'm really quite disappointed in myself because I couldn't do it but my degree needs to be my priority right now.

Juice Cleanse Day 1 Update

Phew, I've made it through the first day! Today I've had two apples, an orange, three tomatoes, four carrots, two celery stalks, a cucumber and lots of spinach and kale- all in juice form! I absolutely loved my breakfast juice, which was orange and apple, because it was really refreshing and woke me up- I didn't even miss my morning coffee that I'm normally so grumpy without! Throughout the day I didn't have any bad effects like headaches (thank god) but I did feel really sleepy, although that is a common occurrence for me.

I'm doing a juice cleanse... What?

I don't know what it is about the start of a new year, but everyone always has all these resolutions and we want to change things and become a better person, etc etc...Well I'm no exception. If you read yesterday's post you will have seen that my main resolution is to be healthier, with the help of my beautiful new juicer that I got for Christmas.

New Year's Resolutions

Happy New Year!
I hope you all had a great start to the new year- I personally had a great night with my friends and spent all of today recovering in bed in my onesie... They should just call it Onesie Day instead of New Year's Day in my opinion. Anyway, now that we've started a new year and whatnot, I thought I'd share some of my new year's resolutions with you! Let's see how long they last this time...

Be healthier
I've always struggled with my health and my weight and as a student especially it's hard to live healthily because of money (and motivation) issues. "Be healthier" is quite vague so the main things I want to do is spend more time cooking nice meals instead of just putting some canned soup in the microwave, use my amazing new juicer (thanks mum and dad!) to make awesome vegetable juices and get my five a day every day and most importantly drink more water- something I always tend to neglect even though it's so important.

Be positive
I've realised throughout the last few months that I have a tendency to complain a lot about the things I don't have and forget to be thankful about all the amazing things I do have. So for this year, I want to have a more positive outlook on things because I think it will not only make me happier but also make me more pleasant to be around...

Take more risks
This one is mainly pole related, as I have a tendency to just stick with what I'm comfortable with- I don't like taking of my hands and letting go even though I know that I'm perfectly secure. That applies to pole and is also quite a good metaphor for the rest of my life.

Be organised
Everyone who knows me knows that I am probably the most messy and unorganised person you will ever meet. It used to not bother me at all but I've not reached a point where I hate my room being messy and I have being unorganised so this year instead of just complaining about it I want to do something about it! *orders a new Moleskine notebook*

Spend less money on things I don't need
If you read this blog you're most likely obsessed with beauty and fashion and pretty things so you probably have the same problem as me- I spend far too much money on things I don't actually need. So in 2014 I want to make fewer impulse purchases, think about whether I really need something before I buy it and just generally try to save more money. No Allie, you do not need that Starbucks coffee! And while you're at it, you don't need that panini either.

So those were my New Year's resolutions- what are yours?
